Ok, that is pretty straight forward... but I am totally serious! So many people ask me how I afford to fly to Haiti every couple months and it is simple, I save my money. I don't always have new, trendy clothes but I have an endless wardrobe full of memories and adventures that will last me much longer than jewelry, clothes, shoes, etc. do.
I am not condemning shopping, but I do think it is an idol in first world Christians and if you get your spending under control you will be able to save money to afford traveling or save money to bless others with by sponsoring a child in an orphanage or sponsoring a missionary!
Try going a whole paycheck without buying one thing other than necessities: gas, food (eat at home as often as possible), bills, toiletries, etc.
This is my advice if you desire to travel or go on a missions trip. If you are going to raise financial support, make sure you are cutting back as well. Why should someone else give you finances to go on mission while you are splurging on yourself and buying unnecessary things? It is all about having a healthy balance and being willing to cut back on earthly things to gain eternal things!
